Objective:
Fatigue is common in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS), yet causal factors and correlates of fatigue are poorly understood in this population. A 2016 review suggested an association between fatigue and emotional difficulties, sleep disturbance, and reduced quality of life in POMS. Information regarding the potential association between fatigue and cognitive challenges is limited and mixed. Through this systematic review, we searched for relationships between fatigue, cognition, and mental health.
Participants and Methods:Systematic review methodology and PRISMA guidelines were followed. Five electronic databases were searched: Ovid: Medline, Ovid: EMBASE, Ovid: PsycInfo, Web of Science and CINAHL. Search terms were specific to each database. Reference lists of included studies were also hand-searched. We included empirical studies that were published in English after 2001, included a sample with confirmed diagnoses of POMS using McDonald criteria, and measured fatigue, cognition and clinical factors including mental health outcomes. Cognition had to be assessed using a standardized assessment tool and studies must have examined associations between outcomes of interest either descriptively or by assessing bivariate or multivariate relationships. Covidence was used to complete the screening, extraction, and quality assessment. Two independent researchers (i.e., T.L.F, and/or S.D, and/or M.G) reviewed each paper included in the title and abstract screen and full text review. S.D and M.G completed the extraction and quality assessments. Conflicts at all stages were resolved by the lead author (T.L.F). The University of Adelaide JBI critical appraisal checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies was used to ensure the scientific rigor of each included study. Sample characteristics and measures of fatigue, clinical and cognitive variables were extracted. A narrative synthesis was conducted.
Results:We identified 1025 abstracts through our initial search and retained 119 articles for full text review. One hundred and six of these studies were excluded during the full text review including six studies which did not examine the relationship between the outcomes of interest. Fifty-one additional studies were identified from hand-searching reference lists of included studies, of which 24 were retained for full text review. A total of 15 studies were extracted and analyzed. Overall, a positive relationship was found between fatigue and mental health outcomes (i.e., anxiety and depression), whereas results were mixed regarding the association between fatigue and performance-based measures of cognition as well as fatigue and other clinical characteristics (e.g., disease duration, EDSS, treatment with DMDs, relapse rate, age at disease onset). In some studies, fatigue and executive functioning performance were negatively related; the relationship was less clear in others (e.g., both fatigued and non-fatigued MS patients demonstrated cognitive challenges, an association between fatigue and executive functioning was identified at follow-up but not baseline). Eleven of the 15 included studies (73%) did not identify associations between fatigue and cognition.
Conclusions:While studies are mixed, fatigue in children has been associated with aspects of cognition. Understanding the relationship between fatigue, cognition, and mental health and identifying gaps in the existing literature, have implications for informing interventions for this clinical population.

This document introduces and explains common implementation concepts and frameworks relevant to healthcare epidemiology and infection prevention and control and can serve as a stand-alone guide or be paired with the “SHEA/IDSA/APIC Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals: 2022 Updates,” which contain technical implementation guidance for specific healthcare-associated infections. This Compendium article focuses on broad behavioral and socio-adaptive concepts and suggests ways that infection prevention and control teams, healthcare epidemiologists, infection preventionists, and specialty groups may utilize them to deliver high-quality care. Implementation concepts, frameworks, and models can help bridge the “knowing-doing” gap, a term used to describe why practices in healthcare may diverge from those recommended according to evidence. It aims to guide the reader to think about implementation and to find resources suited for a specific setting and circumstances by describing strategies for implementation, including determinants and measurement, as well as the conceptual models and frameworks: 4Es, Behavior Change Wheel, CUSP, European and Mixed Methods, Getting to Outcomes, Model for Improvement, RE-AIM, REP, and Theoretical Domains.

The impact of dietary phosphorus on chronic renal disease in cats, humans and other species is receiving increasing attention. As Ca and P metabolism are linked, the ratio of Ca:P is an important factor for consideration when formulating diets for cats and other animals. Here, we describe a fully randomised crossover study including twenty-four healthy, neutered adult cats, investigating postprandial responses in plasma P, ionised Ca and parathyroid hormone (PTH) following one meal (50 % of individual metabolic energy requirement) of each of six experimental diets. Diets were formulated to provide P at either 0·75 or 1·5 g/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) from the soluble phosphorus salt sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP, Na5P3O10), variable levels of organic Ca and P sources, and an intended total Ca:P of about 1·0, 1·5 or 2·0. For each experimental diet, baseline fasted blood samples were collected prior to the meal, and serial blood samples collected hourly for 6 h thereafter. For all diets, a significant increase from baseline was observed at 120 min in plasma PTH (P < 0·001). The diet containing the highest STPP inclusion level and lowest Ca:P induced the highest peaks in postprandial plasma P and PTH levels (1·8 mmol/l and 27·2 pg/ml, respectively), and the longest duration of concentrations raised above baseline were observed at 3 h for P and 6 h for PTH. Data indicate that Ca:P modulates postprandial plasma P and PTH. Therefore, when formulating diets containing soluble P salts for cats, increasing the Ca:P ratio should be considered.

The rocky intertidal communities of Ireland contain a mix of cold- and warm-adapted species, however the spatial distribution of these communities has not been investigated in a systematic way. Based on a benthic community dataset collected in 2003 at 63 sites, several statistical analyses were combined with the aims of (i) detecting groups of similar communities and their spatial arrangement, (ii) relating these groups to environmental factors and (iii) identifying the species that drive the different community groups. Sørensen's index suggested two marine community groups, one of the east and south-east (termed ‘east’) and the other in the west, south-west and north (termed ‘west’). A second partition based on combined wave exposure and sea surface chlorophyll comprised four groups, as did a further partition based on combined sea surface and air temperatures. The spatial arrangement of wave height plus chlorophyll conditions agreed reasonably well with the binary marine community partition, but the temperature partition did not. The ‘east’ community appeared to be associated with low wave height and chlorophyll conditions. The species that were most influential to the ‘east’ community were Balanus crenatus, Austrominius modestus and Fucus vesiculosus. The ‘west’ sites were associated with high wave height/low chlorophyll (with some variation in this due to local shelter) and the species Paracentrotus lividus, Chthamalus stellatus, Alaria esculenta and Himanthalia elongata. A longitudinal pattern rather than one associated with latitude was evident in this marine community and local drivers rather than temperature clines appeared most important for the dominant community patterns.

The bran and particularly the aleurone fraction of wheat are high in betaine and other physiological methyl donors, which may exert beneficial physiological effects. We conducted two randomised, controlled, cross-over postprandial studies to assess and compare plasma betaine and other methyl donor-related responses following the consumption of minimally processed bran and aleurone fractions (study A) and aleurone bread (study B). For both studies, standard pharmacokinetic parameters were derived for betaine, choline, folate, dimethylglycine (DMG), total homocysteine and methionine from plasma samples taken at 0, 0·5, 1, 2 and 3 h. In study A (n 14), plasma betaine concentrations were significantly and substantially elevated from 0·5 to 3 h following the consumption of both bran and aleurone compared with the control; however, aleurone gave significantly higher responses than bran. Small, but significant, increases were also observed in DMG measures; however, no significant responses were observed in other analytes. In study B (n 13), plasma betaine concentrations were significantly and substantially higher following consumption of the aleurone bread compared with the control bread; small, but significant, increases were also observed in DMG and folate measures in response to consumption of the aleurone bread; however, no significant responses were observed in other analytes. Peak plasma betaine concentrations, which were 1·7–1·8 times the baseline levels, were attained earlier following the consumption of minimally processed aleurone compared with the aleurone bread (time taken to reach peak concentration 1·2 v. 2·1 h). These results showed that the consumption of minimally processed wheat bran, and particularly the aleurone fraction, yielded substantial postprandial increases in plasma betaine concentrations. Furthermore, these effects appear to be maintained when aleurone was incorporated into bread.

Whole-grain intake has been reported to be associated with a lower risk of several lifestyle-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, CVD and some types of cancers. As measurement errors in self-reported whole-grain intake assessments can be substantial, dietary biomarkers are relevant to be used as complementary tools for dietary intake assessment. Alkylresorcinols (AR) are phenolic lipids found almost exclusively in whole-grain wheat and rye products among the commonly consumed foods and are considered as valid biomarkers of the intake of these products. In the present study, we analysed the plasma concentrations of five AR homologues in 2845 participants from ten European countries from a nested case–control study in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. High concentrations of plasma total AR were found in participants from Scandinavia and Central Europe and lower concentrations in those from the Mediterranean countries. The geometric mean plasma total AR concentrations were between 35 and 41 nmol/l in samples drawn from fasting participants in the Central European and Scandinavian countries and below 23 nmol/l in those of participants from the Mediterranean countries. The whole-grain source (wheat or rye) could be determined using the ratio of two of the homologues. The main source was wheat in Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK, whereas rye was also consumed in considerable amounts in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The present study demonstrates a considerable variation in the plasma concentrations of total AR and concentrations of AR homologues across ten European countries, reflecting both quantitative and qualitative differences in the intake of whole-grain wheat and rye.

Ira Aldridge -- a black New Yorker -- was one of nineteenth-century Europe's greatest actors. He performed abroad for forty-three years, winning more awards, honors, and official decorations than any of his professional peers. Billed as the "African Roscius," Aldridge developed a repertoire initially consisting of Shakespeare's Othello, melodramas about slavery, and farces that drew on his ability to sing and dance. By the time he began touring in Europe he was principally a Shakespearean actor, playing such classic characters as Shylock, Macbeth, Richard III, and King Lear.
Although his frequent public appearances made him the most visible black man in the world by mid-nineteenth century, today Aldridge tends to be a forgotten figure, seldom mentioned in histories of British and European theater. This collection restores the luster to Aldridge's reputation by examining his extraordinary achievements against all odds. The early essays offer biographical information, while later essays examine his critical and popular reception throughout the world. Taken together, these diverse approaches to Aldridge offer a fuller understanding and heightened appreciation of a remarkable man who had an exceptionally interesting life and a spectacular career.

Summary
Ira Aldridge had a remarkable life and career. Born in lowly circumstances in New York City, educated for a few years at an African Free School, self-taught as an actor but prevented from appearing in plays at white theaters in America, he emigrated to England, began performing as a headliner at minor London theaters while still a teenager, then toured for more than a quarter of a century all over the British Isles, and finally, during the last fifteen years of his life, earned a reputation on the European Continent as one of the greatest tragedians of his day. Aldridge traveled farther, was seen by more people in more nations, and won a greater number of prestigious honors, decorations, and awards than any other actor in the nineteenth century.
Yet his extraordinary accomplishments are not very well known today. He is seldom discussed in histories of British or European theater, and because he had virtually all his professional experience abroad, he tends to be ignored in histories of American theater. Throughout his career he was an itinerant player, moving from place to place fulfilling short-term engagements on stages large and small. He was never under contract to a major metropolitan theater for more than a few weeks at a time, so he made no long-lasting impact on audiences in London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Berlin, Stockholm, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Constantinople, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Moscow, or any of the other cities in which he was sporadically seen. As a luminary, he was more a comet than a fixed star—here today, gone tomorrow—and as a consequence he shines less brightly now, forgotten amidst more constant reminders of theatrical brilliance.
Nearly fifty years ago there was an attempt to bring him out of the shadows and place him before the world in a more conspicuous position so that his trailblazing achievements could be better appreciated. This was the fine documentary biography, Ira Aldridge: The Negro Tragedian (1958), coauthored by Herbert Marshall and Mildred Stock. With help from Aldridge's octogenarian daughter Amanda, Marshall and Stock were able to assemble an impressive record of Aldridge's activities by using materials supplied by Amanda and supplementing these with what they were able to find in libraries and archives throughout Europe and America.
